Functions

  • Precursor to Histamine and Carnosine: Serves as the main precursor for histamine, a neurotransmitter and inflammatory mediator involved in immune responses and gastric acid secretion. Also a component of carnosine, an antioxidant dipeptide found in muscles and the brain that protects cells from oxidative damage and has anti-aging effects.
  • Metal Ion Binding: The imidazole side chain binds strongly to metal ions like zinc, copper, and iron, acting as a chelator. This binding helps in the transport and storage of these metals, regulating their concentration and ensuring proper cellular function.
  • Immune and Digestive Support: Essential for immune function, it aids in antibody synthesis and activation of immune cells. Also required for gastric acid production in the stomach, crucial for proper digestion of food and breaking down proteins.

Applications

  • Supplements: Used to treat histidine deficiency, especially in individuals with genetic disorders like histidinemia or poor nutritional intake. Beneficial for renal disease patients as the kidneys are involved in histidine metabolism. Also included in parenteral nutrition formulations for patients unable to consume nutrients orally.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Functions as a buffer in drug formulations to maintain pH stability and as a stabilizer to prevent drug degradation, ensuring medication efficacy and shelf life.
